22
An experimental book that mimics the creative process during the creation of Bon Iver's "22, A Million". The words of zine 1 are created from a video interview with the artist transcribed through a voice to text program. The printed text appears distorted or fragmented, emulating the way the music is produced by the artist. Zine 2 outlines an interview with Eric Timothy Carlson, the designer who created the visuals for the album, explaining his process for the identity that became "22, A Million".
Background
The content for zine 1 is transcribed from a video interview in which Bon Iver shares his process of creating the album. The artist discusses themes of change through destruction and growth. Digital filtering reshapes the singer's vocals creating new meaning to the listener. To mirror this process of music production, the interview was played from a phone while a voice to text program on another device transcribes the spoken words. The distortion created from this automated process reshapes some of the words, misinterpreted to create new meaning. By contrast, zine 2 is taken from a written interview of the visual designer presented in a conventional format.
